Our Story

Vietnam Memorial

During the Vietnam War, many men from the Edgewood Independent School District (EISD) answered the call to serve their country. At their 20th class reunion, the Edgewood High School Class of 1967 (Class of ’67) discovered that ten of their classmates had been lost in the conflict. Further research revealed a total of 55 EISD men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.

Determined to honor these fallen heroes, the Class of ’67 initiated plans to establish a memorial in their memory. Through dedicated fundraising efforts, they erected the Edgewood Vietnam Memorial in 1988 at the north end of the EISD Veterans Memorial Stadium. Since then, the Class of ’67 has hosted an annual military-style Memorial Day ceremony to pay tribute to the 55 fallen heroes. The ceremony includes a solemn Roll Call of Honor, featuring a drum roll for each name, alongside high-ranking military speakers, performances by a military band, and the moving traditions of a seven-man volley of fire and the playing of taps. Their courage, bravery, and sacrifice continue to be remembered with deep gratitude.

Today, the Memorial has grown to encompass three distinct monuments: the original Edgewood Vietnam Memorial (1988), the Vietnam Era Memorial (2013, donated by the Edgewood District Veterans), and the Fallen Soldier Memorial (2016).

In 2010, the community added another meaningful tribute: the Wall of Honor. This brick wall pays homage to all individuals who have served in the military. Each engraved brick includes the name and military history of the honoree. As of 2024, the Wall of Honor proudly features 395 engraved bricks, with more names added each year to preserve the legacy of service and sacrifice.

Compadres for Scholarships

The Compadres for Scholarships was formally established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2003. Before its official incorporation, the group operated under the name “The Edgewood Class of ’67.” Today, the Compadres for Scholarships proudly continues the tradition of hosting the annual Memorial Day ceremony, honoring the fallen heroes of the Vietnam War.

While many of the organization’s current members are proud alumni of the Class of ’67, its membership has expanded to include individuals from the broader Edgewood community and the greater San Antonio area, fostering a spirit of unity and service.
